Happy Friday, Hip Hop & Hookah Fam!

We made it through another week! How did y’all fare?

This week’s playlist heavily features tracks from Beyonce’s latest project The Lion King: The Gift. I am admittedly not the biggest Beyonce fan - though I fully respect her hustle and bow down to her skills as a performer and entertainer. But in general the music she puts out these days doesn’t inspire me to create a Tidal subscription just to hear it.

However…

Not only is it fully accessible across platform (a rare occurrence with Queen Bey), it takes the Lion King soundtrack to a whole new level and it is incredibly BLACK. AfroBeat dominates the overall sound and so many of the tracks unapologetically celebrate blackness either through lyrical content (see MY POWER, BROWN SKIN GIRL, and BIGGER to name a few) or by way of artist collaborations. Features include Tierra Whack, Moonchild Sanelly, Nija, Busiswa, DJ Lag, Yemi Alade, Tekno, Mr Eazi, Lord Afrixana, Salatiel, Pharrell, Childish Gambino, SAINt JHN, WizKid, Blue Ivy (so cute!!), and (of course) Jay Z. The entire project is definitely worth a listen. The tracks featured on this playlist are my faves and I hope you like them too.

Besides the contributions from The Gift, the rest of the playlist is pretty interesting. It was kind of a slow week for me music wise, but there are a few gems of note - specifically two tracks from Lianne La Havas, to whom I was introduced this week while hanging out with my good friend and Neon Motherboard front-man, Damien Lamar (He’s also the reason I bothered to listen to The Gift and for that I am forever grateful to him). Damien has such incredible taste in music and hosts the weekly radio show, Taste Test, and podcast, Taste Test Live. We may or may not be collaborating on something VERY SOON, so pay attention for more details on that ::wink::
