ListenTo: iAmEnerJi's Weekend Vibe 4.13

What's up, Fam! It's that time again.. Got a fresh, new playlist for you!

This has been a couple weeks in the making and features a wide range of music. I'll be honest - I had to dig into my archives for some of these tracks because I wasn't feeling very inspired by some of the "new" music that came my way since the last compilation. I think what I've come up with is pretty dope, though, so I hope you enjoy. It starts out kinda groovy, gets a little mellow, picks up in the middle, turns just a wee bit grimy, then chills out for a smooth finish. It's the perfect blend to Vibe Out to the weekend. Cheers!

Her Royal Highness: Lady Leshurr

What's up, HH&H Fam? Hope you're all weathering this Mercury Retrograde with as much grace as one can muster in these clusterfucky times!

I know I, for one, am laying as low as possible until all of this energetic confusion ends. However, just because I'm laying low doesn't mean I'm not still finding, collecting, and compiling great music to share with you all! I'm working on the next Weekend Vibe Playlist as we speak and that should be published by Friday coming. Until then, you have to familiarize yourself with this Dope Ass rapper I was introduced to recently who goes by the name of Lady Leshurr...

How could you talk my name and you ain't even brushed your teeth? - Queen's Speech 4

How could you talk my name and you ain't even brushed your teeth? - Queen's Speech 4

Lady Leshurr (aka Melesha Ogarro) is one of those artists you discover and get mad at yourself for not noticing them sooner. This Lady has been releasing music since around 2009, most notably in the form of her beastmode freestyle series "Queen's Speech", the fourth of which went viral in 2016. (Where the hell was I??) You may also have heard her on Nicki Minaj's 2017 MC Freestyle track Panda (though I missed this because I'm not the biggest Nicki fan. I know, I know... blasphemy. I give Nicki her respect, she's just not my every day cup of tea. I took the liberty of queuing the video up to go straight to LL's verse. You're welcome.)

IMG_2759.JPG

A UK native, her family roots go back to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts (Big Up, BadGyal!) and you can hear all of that in every sick, slick verse that drops from her lips. Her flow is amazing, her cadence has range and versatility, and her wordplay is fun and skillfully dizzying. She's playfully aggressive, but don't let the cute face fool you - this chick has the chops to eat you alive.

Her hottest and most recent project is her Black Panther Freestyle and it is a veritable gateway drug to her brilliance. She rides Missy Eliott's She's A Bitch beat so tough and it's pure dopeness. It goes so hard and it's so much fun to watch and listen to. I can't wait to get more familiar with her work and see what she's going to offer in the future.

Peep the video and be sure to check out the rest of her biting catalogue ASAP!

My 3rd freestyle of the year. Directed by King Wowa & edited by me & King Wowa. My first body of work 'UNSTABLE' dropping late summer. VFX - Harry TSU. Big up Missy Elliot on the original!!

ListenTo: iAmEnerJi's Retrograde Mix - Music, Mayhem, & Mercury

It's been an interesting couple of weeks.

I promise I have been trying to write something for this blog since I got back from the forest two weekends ago. (See Going Off The Grid - Part I). When I got back that Sunday, I felt like I was bursting with experiences to share and update you all on. But upon my return, after having all of five minutes to breathe and collect myself, I had to jump right into work and my regularly scheduled chaos. The following Tuesday, I was blessed by a friend with a ticket to go see and listen to Deepak Chopra speak at The Florida Theatre (another AMAZING experience), and followed that up with my usual Tuesday night at SoundCloud Sessions with our very own Mas Appeal. The Wednesday after that was insane and things spiraled from there. By the time Saturday rolled around, I was happy to finally have some real time off and excited to hit up Beats Brunch and Bubbly with my crew. However, in the midst of getting ready for that, the news of Felicia Nicole's tragic passing broke and there's been a heavy energy slowly spreading through the ether ever since.

I'm blaming a good portion of that heaviness on Mercury Retrograde.

merc-retro.jpg

Maybe blame is a strong word (or maybe NOT, because PERSONALLY, the Retrograde and #RetroShade has been fucking with me so hard), but to deny the obvious and tangible shifts that are going on would be ignorant. Those of us that are aware of and sensitive to the subtle energetic shifts that flow like a current through our collective energy fields know that as much as times like this can really suck (like REALLY), there is always a lesson to be learned within the fray.

Besides the typical chaos and confusion that tends to happen in the realms of communication (hello, writer's block), technology (I know MY phone has been acting so crazy), or any sort of plans you THOUGHT you had, Mercury Retrograde has a way of mischievously digging up all of your latent issues - big and small - and forcing you to deal with yourself in relation to them. Things fall apart, sometimes in the most ridiculous fashion, so that not only are you forced to watch in awe, but you're forced to pay attention, really see what's going on, and address it... Or not - but I suggest you do. Mercury doesn't like to be ignored and this Retrograde in Aries is making it even more fiery and demanding than usual. There's an air of "do as I say or get burned" that's proving to be a veritable pain in the ass. Unless, of course, you listen.

This retrograde I've been put in some uncomfortable spots only to find I can navigate them with ease, if I only surrender to the flow. A very close friend told me yesterday, in the midst of another impromptu cry-fest on my part, that I need to "Let Life Happen." And the interesting thing about that is, whenever I DO let go and let Life do it's thing - everything always seems to work out. Maybe not in the way I wanted or expected, but things DO work out one way or another. That has been the overlying theme or lesson for me in this transition. Perfect example: I got myself all worked up about going into the woods to camp for the first time. So much so that other people started to be concerned for me. But I packed my shit, stuck my chin out, braved BOTH of those dirt roads and had one of the BEST weekends of my life. It was EXACTLY what I needed in ways I wasn't even aware of. Had I let my fear get the best of me, I wouldn't have had such a wonderful experience and been changed forever.

It all boils down to experience and letting go. Letting go of what we think life SHOULD be or is SUPPOSED to be. Letting go of attachment to our ideas and comfort zones. Letting go of the notion that we are totally in control of this life experience. The only thing we can ever control is how we react or respond to the events, puzzles, problems, and tragedies that life brings us. I, myself, have had some hard pills to swallow in the past couple of weeks, but I'm better off for it. Every single time that Life decided to karate chop me in the throat recently, it granted me almost immediately with a beautiful experience to cherish, grow or learn from. Whether it was the amazing conversations and re-connections that happened in the wake of losing Felicia; the outpouring of love and support that came from reaching the darkest place I've gotten to in my mind in a LONG time; or the many, many, many wonderful hugs and displays of support that have come my way to help dry the tears that just didn't seem to want to stop flowing, Life has been growing me. And hopefully Life has been growing you too. So I encourage you to let go and Let Life Happen.

It's all going to be just fine.

Going Off The Grid - Part I

So I mentioned in my very first blog here (7 Things You Probably Don't Know About Me) that I am a Certified Yoga Instructor (CYT500). I finished my advanced training last November, but at the time we had a few participants who needed to wrap up some of their credit hours, so we had to hold off on our official graduation (which, honestly, was fine with me because around that time of year, the Holidays tend to suck up all of my time, focus, and energy). It was decided, then, that as part of our final rites of passage, our graduation would be held during the course of a Yoga & Natural Living Roots Retreat happening this coming weekend (March 16-18) hosted by my Yoga Alma Mater - Regenerative Living School.

Sounds great, right?

Yeah... Here's my thing with that...

I have never - in my entire life - gone camping. Ever. Not even a little bit. Not even for a few hours in the back yard with friends and a makeshift tent. And the levels of outdoor living I'm about to experience aren't even CLOSE to the typical version of modern camping we're used to... (I would imagine. Shit, I don't know! I have nothing to compare it to but what I've seen and been told!)

Basically I'm not talking about the cushy, light version of camping I could probably agree to under the right circumstances (i.e. drunkenness). I'm talking outdoor kitchen, outdoor shower (with the option to use the river...!!!), and outdoor composting toilets. Maybe these things are not as out of the ordinary to some of you, but they are foreign concepts to me that I fully understand and support in THEORY, but have never had to experience myself.

Needless to say I'm nervous as shit.

I'm not going to call myself prissy (though I am SURE some of my friends would), but I have a very interesting relationship with Nature and dirt. I love to enjoy them for measured amounts of time that end with me coming back to my climate controlled home - hot running water and fluffy bed included. I enjoy my comforts, Fam. And while I can certainly live without them, and have honestly scaled back a LOT since starting my personal journey with Yoga, doing THIS much scaling back all at once is not a decision I would come to on my own.

I have to say, though, as nervous as I am, there's a small part of me that is getting excited too. My Guru, Tara Rawson, and her co-facilitators have a ton of really cool activities and events planned for us - Bonfires, Plant Walks, Permaculture Workshops, Drum Circles and more. There are going to be gardens and fruit trees, we have vegan meals planned, and of course, I'll be there with some of the friends and family I've made since starting my training at the end of 2016.

It's going to be quite the experience for me, Fam, but I'm here for it in spite of my trepidation. I'm going in full force, eyes, heart, and mind wide open. And while I'm not too keen on sleeping outside in the woods at night, or attempting to bathe in a river (I can't even... Not yet, anyway!), I'm sure this will be an enriching experience for me with a great chance for personal growth - and I'm all about growing, learning and evolving.

Let's just hope I survive the weekend!

Blessings and cheers to another Happy Monday, HH&H Fam! It's your girl EnerJi back with another mix of dopeness for you to vibe to ^_^

The Weekly Vibe has a few more tracks this week featuring everything from my staple Lo-Fi vibes to Electronic Trap, all the way around to a 90's throwback inspired joint. The highlights of this compilation for me, though, have to be the tracks Navajo by Masego and Sweet You by Phonte. I literally can NOT stop listening to either of these tracks. I caught both of them last week on Mas Appeal's Sound Cloud Sessions (Listen LIVE on Facebook every Tuesday from 9-10pm. Click HERE for info on this week's upcoming broadcast.)

Banksy at Jax Public Library

Finally got a chance last night to get out to the Jacksonville Public Library for the Haight Street Rat by Banksy exhibit and it did not disappoint!

Co-curated by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, the exhibit opened on February 14th and will run until April 7th, 2018.

The "Writing On The Walls" installation, held in the Jax Makerspace, features street art inspired work by local and regional artists with the 7'x7.5' Banksy original as the cherry on top. It's an amazing display and it's right here in our city, so make sure you get out to see it before it's gone!
